Spanish-language song Despacito is now Billboard’s number one hit, and is tied with “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran, according to online reports.

In a news article on Goldderby, the song by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber now sits on the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles for straight three months. The spot has been filled in by Ed Sheeran with “Shape of You” as the longest-running chart song this year.

Goldderby noted that only 19 singles have been at the top of the Billboard hit charts for that long throughout the music website’s history.

Since ‘Macarena.’

Billboard’s number one spot on the longest-running songs on the hit chart has not had a Spanish song since Los Del Rio’s “Macarena” in 1996. It took another Latin beat and over two decades before another Spanish song reclaims the throne.

The news report noted that Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’sDespacito” has been a chart-topping hit since May 27. Three months after, it reached the longest-running mark.

“Just reaching the top spot was a groundbreaking achievement,” the report stated.

“Despacito” tied the record with Ed Sheeran. The song “Shape of You” topped the list back in January but went back for 11 straight weeks from February to April.

Indian version

The Puerto Rican chart-topping song has earned international fame after being recorded in Indian by an award-winning choreographer, Catch News reported.

On Thursday, Universal Music reportedly launched the Indian cover of “Despacito” with choreographer Shiamak Davar. Along with the Indian dance cover, Davar also launched a hashtag Despacito Movement campaign where dancers wearing sari moved to the beats of the song.

Singer Luis Fonsi expressed his gratitude to Catch News. In the report, Fonsi said he is in love with the dance video and cover made by the Indian choreographer.

He believes that the Indian version has taken his song to a new level. The Indian cover showcased the dances of the locals as well.

The Spanish language music video came out in January and had since garnered over a billion views on YouTube. Pop superstar Justin Bieber has also made a remix out of the trending song.

“Despacito” has reportedly been streamed more than 700 million times in the United States alone, apart from its position at the top of the hit charts.

The song has been in the playlists of dance sessions, aerobics classes, Latin fusion classes and fitness centers around the world.
