The story that an increasing number of Millennial Women want to date older Men was, to say the least, intriguing to this aging baby boomer. Apparently, it all boils down to a remarkable number of millennial men relying on Tinder to pick up women, have sex with them, and then cast them aside like a bottle that their favorite craft beer came in. What it all boils down to is that women, even in the 18 to 35 year old demographic, want to be treated like a lady. They want to be appreciated as a human being, with intelligence and feelings. They don’t want their lives to be one empty hookup after another.
After enjoying a split second of a warm fantasy of lovely 20-somethings wanting a little romance, one wonders how accurate this story actually is. The original story was in Vanity Fair, which means that the women being interviewed were likely northeastern, urban liberals of the sort that used to be portrayed in the gone and hopefully soon to be forgotten HBO series “Girls.” Surely in the south and the heartland, women still get dinner and a movie before the decision of her place or his comes up. This writer personally knows at least four 20-something men who know how to romance a lady.
Back in the day, as the sexual revolution was raging, one night stands were certainly common. But getting to them tended to be more involved than a swipe on Tinder.
One had to actually meet someone in a social setting, talk to them, and even learn their first names. There was no searching on a smartphone app and looking at a headshot and nodding, “He’ll do.” More often than not, he won't.
More often than many might realize, even the most sexually adventurous women back in the seventies and eighties had a rule that some time had to pass before sex could be considered.
That time varied from maybe two or three dates to a month or even six months. Some actually waited until marriage, remarkably enough, even without being particularly religious.
Young women need to know that young men still exist who know how to treat a lady or at least have the desire to. The first thing that needs to happen is that the tinder app needs to be deleted from the smartphone.
Then millennials need to learn how to find a mate the old-fashioned way. To be sure, traditional dating is certainly not in a safe space, for nothing worthwhile really is. But the rewards are much better. One may not have a different bed partner every weekend. But there is something to be said about quality over quantity.
