The Cubs took a bit of a flyer in the sixth round. Not because he's not worth the pick, but because he might be hard to sign.

The Chicago Cubs took high school catcher Ethan Hearn with their sixth-round pick. Fans might want to get to know him rather quickly.

1

He could be the best high school catcher in the draft

Hearn is widely considered one of the best prospects in this year's draft. Some of that has to do with the position he plays. There aren't a ton of great catchers this year. Most scouts consider him the best of his class.

2

He's got a lot of raw power

Vance Law is among those who says that Hearn has a ton of raw power. That's something the Cubs always love to see, especially in their catchers. While Schwarber was a more polished version of Hearn, the power bat at the position is likely why they went back to that well.

3

He'll likely be "very" overslot

Through the first five rounds, the Cubs were making some picks that screamed "underslot." That might have been in anticipation of this kind of pick. Rated as the 71st best player in the entire draft by some, he'll likely need to be paid quite a bit more than a 6th rounder. The Cubs have the pool money to do it.

4

He has a hole in his swing

While he's considered a very good prospect, there is also something that Law at least, believes he's seen that should be concerning. The young catcher has a swing that some scouts say needs to be completely reworked. Since he would start out at very low A ball should he sign, he'll have some time to get it worked out.

5

He could be college bound

One of the reasons a player that could have gone in the first three rounds lasted until the sixth is that he's committed to play at Mississippi State. The Cubs are going to need to pay him some serious cash to lure him away from college ball.
