The Chicago Cubs didn't have a great first weekend. They lost two of three to the lowly Texas Rangers, who are expected to be among the worst in the American League. Several things stood out for a team that had promised to be getting off to a better start than this.
There's still something wrong with Yu
Yu Darvish had a horrendous first start of the season. This was after spending all spring laying the groundwork for a great season. In 2.2 innings, he walked seven and allowed three runs. While some are trying to claim this was about nerves, the more likely scenario is that there is still something physically wrong with him. Either way, this is still not the Yu Darvish Cubs fans were expecting in 2019.
The bullpen is attrocious
The Cubs had leads in both Saturday and Sunday's games. They blew them both. We knew their bullpen was going to be iffy but it appears there's about one person the team can count on now. Steve Cishek is the only guy who didn't have problems. Pedro Strop's outing was perhaps the worst of the weekend just because he appeared to have no clue what he was doing.
Walks are going to kill this team
The Chicago Cubs walked 20 batters over three games. Yes, 12 of those were in Saturday's game, but walking six on Sunday was bad too. If the team can't find a way to put batters away, instead of putting runners on, this is going to be a long season.
Hulk could be back
Kyle Schwarber enjoyed starting the season in a launching pad. While he sat out most of the season opener, he played Saturday and Sunday and played well. For the series, he hit .417 with two homers and three RBI.
Baez proving to be among the best
Javier Baez wants to prove that 2018 wasn't a flash in the pan. After hitting two homers in the season opener, he continued to have a good weekend. Against the Rangers, he hit .429 with two homers, six RBI and also stole two bases.
