The NFL regular season came to an end on Sunday. The year brought much excitement and also saw many records fall.
According to ESPN, there were 1,371 combined touchdowns during the regular season which is a new league record. It was also the second-most total points that have ever been scored in a season.
Here are some notable records that were broken by players during the 2018 regular season, starting with two new records by first-year players.
Baker Mayfield, Browns - most touchdown passes by a rookie
Despite not making his debut until the second quarter of the Browns' third game, Mayfield's 27 touchdown passes are the most ever by a rookie. He ended the season with back-to-back three touchdown games which helped him barely surpass the previous record of 26 set by Russell Wilson and Peyton Manning.
Saquon Barkley, Giants - most receptions in a season by a rookie running back
With four catches in the Giants' final regular season game, Barkley ended the year with 91 receptions. That set a new mark for most by a rookie running back in league history. It was previously owned by Reggie Bush who snagged 88 balls as a first-year player in 2006 with the Saints.
Christian McCaffrey, Panthers - most receptions in a season by a running back
While the Panthers failed to make the playoffs after a 6-2 start, McCaffrey should receive none of the blame. His extraordinary sophomore season saw him secure 107 passes which is the most-ever by a running back. Matt Forte held the old record which he set in 2014 with 102 receptions.
Drew Brees, Saints - most career passing yards
After 18 seasons and 263 starts, Brees' 74,437 passing yards are topped by nobody. He passed the record held by Peyton Manning (71.940 yards) in the second quarter of a Week 5 game against the Redskins. The future Hall of Famer has led the league in yards through the air seven different times.
Drew Brees, Saints - highest completion percentage in a season
According to SI, Brees also set the record for highest completion percentage in a season at 74.4 percent. At the age of 39, he broke his own record that was set the previous year when he completed 72 percent. It is the fifth time in 18 seasons (and the third straight year) that he has completed at least 70 percent.
Adam Vinatieri, Colts - most career points
Now in his 23rd season, Vinatieri passed Morten Andersen (2,544 points) in Week 8 of this season for most career points. Vinatieri now has 2,600 in his storied career which has consisted of 582 made field goals and 852 made extra points. He turned 46 years old on December 28.
Zach Ertz, Eagles - most receptions in a season by a tight end
Ertz broke the record in Week 16 set by Jason Witten in 2012 (110 catches) for most receptions by a tight end in a season. He ended up with 116 on the year, one that saw him catch at least ten passes in five outings.
George Kittle, 49ers - most receiving yards in a season by a tight end
Travis Kelce held the record for about an hour after ending the year with 1,336 receiving yards. That was surpassed by Kittle whose 149 yards in the regular season finale gave him 1,377 total. Rob Gronkowski was previously the record holder with 1,327 in 2011.
Aaron Rodgers, Packers - most consecutive passes without an interception
While the Packers underwent a disappointing season, Rodgers set a new top standard in the league for most consecutive passes without an interception. He set the new mark in Week 14 beating the old record of Tom Brady's 367 passes without one that spanned two seasons (2010-11). Rodgers went 402 passes without giving the ball up to the other team before finally throwing a pick against the Bears in Week 15.
