At 63-98 with a win percentage of .391, the Marlins were the worst team in the National League, and they only finished with a better record than the Orioles and Royals.
With most of their top trade chips gone and their time to contend very far away, here are some players the Marlins should look at trading to bolster their roster for the future.
J.T. Realmuto
After publicly expressing that they plan on keeping Realmuto and offering him an extension, Realmuto's agent publicly stated that they have no interest in staying in Miami. Instead of letting him walk for nothing, the Marlins should trade him now and get a strong return for him as he is their best trade chip they have left. Realmuto slashed .277/.340/.484 with 21 HR, 74 RBI, and 54 extra base hits. Realmuto would be a perfect fit any contending team that's in need of a catcher.
Starlin Castro
Castro was the major league player they got in return for Stanton when they shipped him to the Yankees last offseason. In his first season with the Marlins, Castro slashed .278/.329/.400 with 32 doubles. A bunch of teams are in need of a second baseman, and with limited second base options on the free agent market, they should give Marlins GM Derek Jeter a call for Castro.
Jose Urena
Even though he isn't a fantastic pitcher, Urena should garner some interest to contending teams across the league where he could fit as a fourth or fifth pitcher in the rotation. Urena averages 96 MPH with his fastball and only gave up 19 HR in 174 innings.
Drew Steckenreider
The Marlins have quite a few bullpen pieces that should garner interest from contending teams and one bullpen piece is already gone as last month; they traded Barraclough to the Nationals. Another bullpen arm that should get some interest from contending teams is Drew Steckenreider. Steckenreider struck out 74 across 64 2/3 innings, and he won't be a free agent until 2023 which makes him even more appealing.
Adam Conley
The biggest reason why any team would want Conley is that he has the ability to both start and pitch out of the bullpen. If a starter were to get injured, Conley would be able to fill his spot in the rotation. In 2018, Conley struck out 50 in 50 2/3 innings with a career-best .207 opponent average.
Derek Dietrich
Dietrich was never a starter until this season when the Marlins traded most of their players away during the previous offseason. In his first season as a starter, Dietrich slashed .265/.330/.421 and was a valuable player for the Marlins as he played multiple positions on the field.
