The Seattle Seahawks made the surprising move to waive Dwight Freeney late Tuesday (Nov. 21). The Seahawks signed Freeney to add depth to the defensive line after Cliff Avril was lost for the season. Freeney ended up playing just four games for the Seahawks, putting up two sacks against the Washington Redskins and one against the Houston Texans.
Less than a month after signing Freeney, the Seahawks are already moving in a different direction. There hasn’t been a lot of information from the front office about this situation and no corresponding roster move has been made either.
The press release from the team was very simple and just stated that the Seahawks had waived Freeney. He can now be claimed by any other team but becomes a free agent if he passes through waivers.
What are the Seahawks doing?
There are a lot of rumors online and quite a few debates taking place on social media about what the team is doing with this move. Many Seahawks fans were very surprised that the team was already getting rid of Freeney, especially after having a really good game against the Redskins back in Week 9. There have also been a lot of jokes about the need to cut kicker Blair Walsh instead of a defensive lineman.
With severe holes on the roster when it comes to the secondary, one theory among NFL analysts and Seahawks fans is that the team will look to add another cornerback.
All-Pro players Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman are out for the year with injuries, raising a lot of questions about the depth of the roster. It could be easy to assume that the Seahawks will add a cornerback to fill the roster spot opened up by Freeney.
More Seahawks news
The Seattle Seahawks are coming off a really tough loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
With just a few seconds left and a chance to tie the game, Blair Walsh missed a 52-yard field goal and the Seahawks lost 34-31. In the updated NFL playoff picture, the Seahawks are now on the outside looking in, with a tough road to get back to the postseason. That road begins with a game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday (Nov.
26).
A small piece of good news for the Seahawks is that the Los Angeles Rams also lost in Week 11. That keeps the Seahawks just one game out of first place in the NFC West. Since the Seattle Seahawks still hold the head-to-head tiebreaker in this matchup, it gives the team hope of hosting a first-round playoff game. A rematch against the Rams is still on the schedule a bit later in the season as well.
