American tennis player Donald Young has reached the Shenzhen Open quarter-finals. The No. 8 seed managed to survive the Jeremy Chardy challenge. The American was made to work, but eventually, beat the Frenchman 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

Young quickly found himself trailing to Chardy. France's Chardy broke Young to open up a 2-1 lead, but the American immediately broke back to make it 2-2. However, Chardy broke once again in the following game and went on to eventually open up a 5-3 lead.

Yet, Young resisted, as he managed to break back Chardy once again and tie at 5-5.

Chardy saved two set points in the 12th game before the set went into a tie-break. The Frenchman had the lead in the tie-break, but once again couldn't capitalize. The American overturned a 4-2 tie-break deficit to claim the opening set.

Both players held on to their serves after the opening eight games of the second set. Chardy was serving at 4-4 when Young went on to break the Frenchman. No. 8 seed Young then served out for the straight sets in the following game.

Young fired 11 aces and won 74 percent of his first serve points against Chardy. The American broke the Frenchman three times during the match. On the other side, Chardy broke the No. 8 seed twice during their matchup, but it wasn't enough.

The match came to an end after just over an hour and a half of action.

It was the third ever meeting between the two. Young now has a 2-1 head-to-head record against Chardy. The Frenchman beat the American at the Canadian Masters in 2012 before he lost at the Indian Wells Masters in 2015 and this week in Shenzhen.

Young plays Goffin next

No. 2 seed David Goffin will be the next opponent of Young at the Shenzhen Open. The Belgian tennis star saw off world No. 88 Evgeny Donskoy 7-6 (5) 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals. The two players had no previous meeting at the ATP level.

The underdog Donskoy was threatening to Goffin at the beginning of the match.

The Belgian managed to save Donskoy's break point in the sixth game of the match. As no breaks of serve were seen, the set went into a tie-break. Goffin had a 4-2 tie-break led, but Donskoy managed to tie it at 5-5. However, that was all, as Goffin went on to win two points in a row and seal the opener.

After a tight first set, Goffin stormed past the second set. The No. 2 seed never looked back after breaking Donskoy early on to open up a 3-1 lead. In the end, it took an hour and 23 minutes of action for the Belgium to beat Donskoy.

Set to face off once again

World No. 61 Young and tennis star Goffin will be meeting for the second time when they clash off in the Shenzhen Open quarter-finals.

It will be their first match in five years. Back in 2012, Goffin handed a straight sets defeat to Young at the Miami Masters. It will be a big ask for Young to crush down the second favorite of the tournament. It remains to be seen can the American pull off an upset and beat the world No. 12 this Friday.
