The Carolina Panthers have announced the hiring of a replacement general manager after they surprisingly fired GM Dave Gettleman two days ago. Also, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end and former first round pick Dante Fowler has been arrested, while Detroit Lions defensive Armonty Bryant has once again been suspended.
Panthers bring in Hurney as interim GM
The Carolina Panthers have gone back in time with their hiring on an interim general manager, picking former GM Marty Hurney for the job. Hurney was previously the Panthers general manager from 2002 to 2012.
He was fired after the team started 1-5 in the 2012 season, with the recently fired Dave Gettleman taking over as GM at the end of that season.
Hiring Hurney will allow the Panthers the wait until the end of the upcoming season to hire a full-time GM. Team officials also said he will help with the process of selecting a new general manager when the time comes. Hurley was responsible for drafting 10 of the team's 21 starters that played in the Panthers Super Bowl 50 appearance.
Fowler arrested in St.Petersburg, Florida
Dante Fowler was arrested last night at 9:02 p.m. on charges of simple battery and mischief. He was released on bail at 1:43 a.m. Wednesday morning on $650 bail. According to the police report, Fowler got out of his car to confront a man after he made a comment about Fowler's driving.
From there the situation escalated into an argument that resulted in Fowler hitting the man and stomping on his prescription glasses. He then tossed the man's grocery bag, which contained newly purchased liquor, into a lake.
Fowler missed his whole rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015 due to a torn ACL. Last season he played in all 16 games, but only started one.
The 22-year-old has 23 tackles, 4 sacks and 5 passes defended.
Bryant suspended for the third time
Armonty Bryant has been suspended for four games after he violated the NFL's substance abuse policy for the second time. Last season when Bryant was with the Cleveland Browns, he was suspended for the first four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.
The Detroit Lions claimed him off of waivers from the Browns in October, but he was suspended in November for three games for his first violation of the substance abuse policy. Last season Bryant only played in five games, all with the Lions. He had 4 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble.
