The heavy snow in the northern part of the United States was not enough to stop two of the best performances of the Major League Soccer as expansion team Atlanta United trounced Minnesota United in a 1-6 astonishing away win, while New York FC spanked DC United with less-stress in a frigid temperature at the New York City's Yankee Stadium.
Elsewhere, MLS Western Conference new boy Nick Lima continued to impress for his club; Seattle Sounders. Here is my compiled summary of the most deserving teams and players I feel were the most exceptional in the Major League Soccer Match-day 2 actions.
Rookie of the week
There is a good feeling that the Seattle Sounders Homegrown Player Nick Lima will dominate this category during the season. The Quakes full-back turned in his second straight exceptional performance last Saturday, as Lima notched a goal with his defensive exploit against Vancouver Whitecaps.
Goal of the week
This honor came-down to two exceptionally beautiful goals, one from last Saturday and the other from a Sunday game action. But this honor went to Atlanta United's forward Miguel Almiron for his stunning volleyed attempt that put Atlanta United up 4-1 lead at the TCF Bank Stadium.
Team of the week
It's easy to think of Atlanta United as the best team in MLS week 2 based on their 6-1 mauling over Minnesota United.
But for me the team that impressed in the MLS Week 2 was the New York City FC as Patrick Vieira's tutored men churned-out a superlative attacking potency in their 4-0 home win over DC United at the Yankee Stadium. The fantastic four of David Villa, Rodney Wallace, Maximiliano Moralez and Jack Harrison were too good for the Capital city's side from start-to-finish.
Player of the week
Josef Martinez was one of the several Atlanta attackers who capitalized from Minnesota United porous defending. The 23-year-old Venezuelan International forward began the scoring spree in the 3rd minute and later piled on with strikes in the 27th and 75th minutes respectively which ultimately gave expansion team Atlanta United its first MLS victory in grand style.
