The second post 2015 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on development to be convened under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council has been scheduled for Monday, July 10th, 2017 to Wednesday, July 19th, 2017. A three-day ministerial meeting of the 2017 HLPF will be held on July 17th, 2017 to July 19th, 2017. The Forum will review the implementation of 7 of the 17 SDGs adopted by UN member countries in September 2015.


The SDGs are the successor goals of the year 2000 UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which were implemented between the year 2000 and the end of 2015.

Goals on hunger, health, and gender among those to be reviewed

The goals to be reviewed at the political forum will include Sustainable Development Goal #17 which focuses on the strengthening of the means of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and revitalization of the global partnership for sustainable development.


According to the UN-DSD, Goal #17 “…will be considered each year” during the SDGs implementation period.

The other #SDGs that will be reviewed during the HLPF in 2017 are goal #1 which seeks to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere," goal #2: which aims to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”, and goal #3 which aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.

Goal #5 which addresses the concern of gender inequality, Goal #9 on infrastructure, innovation, and sustainable industrialization, together with goal #14 which advocates for conservation of oceans, seas, and good use of marine resources for sustainable development will also be under review.

Globalization must work for everyone

At the end of the 2016 HLPF on July 20th, a Ministerial Declaration was adopted and calls for implementation of SDGs in their entirety.

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) President, Oh John who chaired the 2016 Forum highlighted the need for transformative leadership in the implementation of the development goals as he urged world leaders to ensure that globalization works for everyone.

HLPF in July, 2016 had as its central feature the voluntary national reviews by 22 countries on the steps they were taking towards the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
