With initial reluctance President Obama eventually gave in to the invitation to dance the tango. First Lady Michelle Obama joined him with her own Latin dancer. Despite attempts to wave off the Argentine tango dancer, President Obama finally took the lead and surprised the world by showing his moves.

"It was wonderful to see President Obama dance the tango in the spirit of how it was born: impromptu, improvised, and with elegance," says tango maestroNey Melo, who is invited to teach tango around the world.

Some criticized Obama for continuing his travel itinerary during the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels.“That is how we are going to defeat these terrorist groups,” said the president. “A lot of it is also going to be to say, ‘you do not have power over us. We are strong. Our values are right. You offer nothing except death.’”

Tango - Dance of Mystery and Seduction

Often confused with American ballroom tango which is more rigid and structured, Argentine tango is a dance of improvisation with some key movements.

The roots of Argentine tango go as far back as the first African settlers in the Latin American colony.Typically, what people mistake with Argentine tango is the choreographed dance that is seen on such shows as Dancing with the Stars. These dancers typically take lessons with ballroom dance instructors that teach them routines to rehearse over and over again.

Can This Dance of Passion Heal Old Wounds?

The president’s visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of a 1976 military coup which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Argentinians. There are talks of declassifying documents on America’s role in this conflict.

Despite controversy over the involvement of Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in the “Dirty War,” many Argentines were proud of the first pope from the Americas representing their nation.

Considered a folk dance at one point, Argentine tango has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. There are now hundreds of nightly and weekly dance events around the world.
