"Uncharted" without title character?

The fourth installment of the "Uncharted" series is set to be released on April 26th, and while the subtitle of the game, "A Thief's End," suggests that it'll be the final game of the series, Australian Network News is suggesting that Naughty Dog, the developer of the series, may in fact continue the series without its longtime protagonist, Nathan Drake.

It's hard to fathom an "Uncharted" game without Nathan Drake as the lead character, as he has been one of the more popular characters in gaming since the first installment of the game was released back in 2007.

Uncharted 4 will introduce some new characters to the series, most notably Nate's older brother, Sam Drake, who was previously thought to be dead.

Some have suggested that Naughty Dog's idea for Sam would be to take over as the lead character in the series after "A Thief's End," however, that doesn't seem likely, as the game's trailer, which can be seen below, suggests that Sam will end up meeting his demise at some point in the game:

Jeremy Yates, who is Naughty Dog's lead animator, tweeted out last Monday that he would be "donning the Drake suit one last time." So, if the developer does in fact decide to continue the series, then this would suggest that they're continuing it without Nathan Drake.

As for how Naughty Dog will conclude Nathan Drake's journey, well, that remains to be seen. The character meeting his demise does seem unlikely, although, if they want to make it clear that they're either finishing the series, or continuing the series without Nate, then that would be the obvious way to go.

Nathan Drake isn't the only character created by Naughty Dog who is rumored to be no longer involved in a game's series, as Joel and Ellie, who were the lead characters in "The Last of Us," may not be returning in "The Last of Us 2," which Naughty Dog is expected to begin working on following the released of "Uncharted 4" in April.

If Naughty Dog did make the decision to continue the series without Nathan Drake, then they'd have quite a tough act to follow, and they'd almost certainly be the subject of some harsh criticism, no matter who Nate's replacement ends up being.
