Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland is the 2nd seed in the 2017 ATP Brisbane draw, a tournament that leads up the 2017 Australian Open, and as such he will enjoy a first-round bye. Looking ahead, Wawrinka will probably face Viktor Troicki in the 2nd round as that player only has a qualifier in the first round to beat. Later round matches may feature Lucas Pouille, Kei Nishikori, and perhaps Milos Raonic.

Wawrinka debuting in Brisbane

Wawrinka is entering the tournament in Brisbane for the first time in his career. He commented on his debut at the event a short time ago, a quote that BrisbaneTennis tweeted on Wednesday.

"It's nice to change scenery," Wawrinka said, "and start the new year somewhere else. I'm really happy to be here." The Swiss player is a veteran on tour who is coming off the two most successful seasons of his career according to title counts. In 2015 Wawrinka won four titles on tour, while last season he won the same amount. He commonly enters ATP Chennai at this time of the season and it is a little peculiar that he chose to miss that event. After all, he was the three-time defending champion in the tournament and he also won it in 2011.

Wawrinka 2nd favorite in Brisbane

Wawrinka enters Brisbane 2017 as the 2nd favorite to win the title on outrights with Paddy Power. The Swiss is priced at 33/10 to win straight-up, not far behind 3/1 Milos Raonic.

Kei Nishikori is the 3rd favorite with the sportsbook, making a Wawrinka/Nishikori potential semifinal one to watch out for. Based on head to heads, Wawrinka only holds a 4-3 advantage against Nishikori with their most recent match coming late in 2016 from the Tour Finals. Nishikori won that match in straight sets following a loss in the US Open semifinals a little earlier and it will be interesting to see them renew their series.

Looking ahead, all of the key players in Brisbane are expected to be at the Australian Open. Who will miss the Aussie?. That tournament is really just around the corner now, one that Wawrinka won in 2014.
