Roderick Strong has a chance to earn a title shot next week on NXT. This is thanks to his victory over "The Drifter" Elias Samson on Wednesday night's show.

NXT had four qualifying matches for a fatal 4-way to be held next week which will determine a new #1 contender for Shinsuke Nakamura's NXT Championship. With Nakamura defeating Samoa Joe inside a steel cage to start the show this week, a new contender for the throne is needed.

Roderick Strong vs 'The Drifter' Elias Samson

You would be hard-pressed to find too many people that enjoy "The Drifter", but evidently WWE officials have opted not to scrap the gimmick and re-package the performer.

Before this match could begin on Wednesday night, Samson appeared on stage with a guitar. A lone spotlight shined down upon him as he strummed and sang his "drifter" tune. How this is continuing is anybody's guess. He sang his song while the crowd booed, and then finally went to the ring.

Strong came out, still yet to fully make an impact since debuting with the brand. Strong has held championships for all the top indies out there, including Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Ring of Honor. Adding an NXT Championship to his resume seems fitting for him.

This match started out all Drifter. As soon as the bell rang, Samson went on offense. Samson has quite the size advantage on Strong, who looks smaller in NXT than he did in ROH.

The match was basically all Samson in the beginning, getting heat and cutting off Strong's comeback attempts. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Strong landed a dropkick, a series of moves, a gut buster, and then finally finished him off with a running kick to the face.

Roderick Strong to Challenge for the NXT Championship?

The victory secured Strong's spot in next week's fatal 4-way match. The first two qualifiers were Tye Dillinger and Andrade "Cien" Almas, both of whom make interesting next opponents for Nakamura. Strong however, also makes a strong case as a future opponent for Nakamura.

With the Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura feud over, the brand needs a new #1 contender, and it could very well be Roderick Strong. We'll find out next week.
