It appears that Nebraska football head coach Mike Riley was a good boy this year. Because of that, Santa brought the coach a very special present on Christmas morning, in the form of the school's first commitment to the 2017 class in several months. This commit, in the form of Andrew Ward, is looking like it will shore up what has already been a pretty impressive recruiting class at the linebacker position. Now the coaching staff will hope this recruit is the beginning of a turnaround after the recruiting cycle seems to have taken a downturn.

Ward announces he's a Husker

While the sporting world, in general, takes Christmas day off, for the most part, Andrew Ward wanted to make sure the Nebraska Football had something to celebrate besides the Holiday.

Ward announced his decision on Twitter with the caption "honored To Say I Will Be Committing To The University Of Nebraska." The Michigan native was obviously someone who was on the Huskers' radar, but it doesn't appear anyone knew exactly when the player was going to be committing to any school, let alone the Nebraska football team.

Who the Huskers beat out

Andrew Ward might be a member of the Nebraska football team, but the Huskers were far from the only school who were hoping for his services. NU was even far from the only school in their conference that were hoping the linebacker would commit to them. Indiana, Penn State, and Minnesota were all in on Ward. There were other power five conference schools that were after Ward as well and that likely means while he has committed, the recruiting process might not be over just yet.

Interestingly enough, neither of the Big Ten's Michigan schools were in on Ward, though quite a few of the Pac 12 universities have been hard after the linebacker in the last few months. The good news is that there really isn't that much time left until kids like Ward can sign on the dotted line and make their commitment binding.

Until National Signing Day, the Nebraska football team is going to have to keep an eye on Ward.
