The Buffalo Bills playoff hopes were already on thin ice before a week 16 tilt with the Miami Dolphins. Buffalo needed a lot from the rest of the league in order to remain alive even with a win against the Dolphins. Instead, the Bills lost to Miami in heartbreaking fashion late in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

Bills Dolphins Recap.

The first time these two teams met, Jay Ajayi ran for more than 200 yards and led the Dolphins to a win. This game was no different as the Bills poor tackling allowed Ajayi to rack up more than 200 rushing yards once again. Kenyan Drake scored a 56 yard touchdown on what was just one of the many examples of poor tackling by the Bills all game.

The offense managed to keep the team in the game and Tyrod Taylor led a comeback late to put the Bills up 31-28. But Matt Moore managed to lead the Dolphins down the field and gave Andrew Franks a chance for a 55 yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Bills got the ball down to the Miami 17 yard line before a disastrous Reggie Bush reverse led to a missed 45 yard field goal by Dan Carpenter. The Buffalo defense managed to hold after that, giving Tyrod Taylor another chance. Then, in what was likely the most ridiculous call of the game, Rex Ryan chose to punt on 4th and 2 with just 4 minutes left in overtime. Buffalo absolutely needed a win for its playoff hopes, making his choice one of the more ridiculous calls imaginable.

The Bills defense then trotted out only ten players on first down and Jay Ajayi promptly ran for 57 yards to seal the Dolphins victory.

How Would Bills Playoff Positioning Look if They Had Won?

If the Bills had managed to hold on for the victory against the Dolphins, they would currently be 8-7 and still in the playoff race.

The following games all went the Bills way in week 16.

  • Jaguars beat Titans
  • Steelers beat Ravens
  • Raiders beat Colts
  • Chiefs beat Broncos (Less relevant, Bills would have needed Denver loss to Raiders regardless)

If the Bills had won, here's what they would have needed in week 17 to sneak into the playoffs.

  • Patriots beat Dolphins
  • Bengals beat Ravens
  • Texans beat Titans
  • Raiders beat Broncos

If that scenario occurs, Rex Ryan and the Bills will be kicking themselves for losing a very winnable game against the Miami Dolphins at home in overtime.
