Garden debut

On Saturday November 12, 2016 UFC will make its long awaited debut as Madison Square Garden will host UFC 205. This will be the first time Madison Square Garden will host a mixed martial arts bout. Governor George Pataki banned the sport in the state of New York in 1997. Over the summer, lawmakers in the New York state assembly approved of the legislation that will allow mixed martial arts bouts to take place in the state of New York. New York was the last state to legalize and regulate mixed martial arts.

With the sport now legalized, UFC officials have confirmed that New York will host at least 4 shows per year for the next three years. UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta is excited about the legalization. In a statement, he states "We look forward to hosting our first New York event in the world’s most famous arena — Madison Square Garden, home to so many epic sporting events throughout the decades. We also look forward to scheduling events in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, and Brooklyn.

We are excited."

UFC 205

UFC is headlined by the lightweight title bout between champion Eddie Alvarez and one of the most interesting guys in all of sports, featherweight champion, Connor McGregor. McGregor is looking at becoming the first UFC fighter in history to hold two belts at different weight classes simultaneously. McGregor is UFC's biggest financial draw thus far, with three consecutive million pay-per view buys, as UFC 205 shouldn't break that streak. According to UFC president Dana White, UFC 205 has broken the Madison Square Garden gate record.

The numbers have yet to be announced. Prior to UFC 205 breaking the record, the live gate record for a combat sport was $13.5 million from a 1999 boxing match between Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. That bout drew a sell-out crowd of 21,284. The Saturday night MMA bout should be a fun one for the Garden fans. Madison Square Garden is one of the best arenas inthe world and New Yorkers will definitely bring the energy.
