Rafael Nadal recently used Facebook to communicate a congratulatory message to World No. 1 Andy Murray for the Scot's recent achievement. On Monday, Nadal was focused on updating the progress of his own career as he works to get back to competitive tennis matches after ending his 2016 season early. His verified Twitter account stated the following on Monday morning: "Excited to announce my first tournament back will be in Abu Dhabi at #MubadalaWorldTennisChampionship in December."

Abu Dhabi is not a regular tour event

The Abu Dhabi event is an invitational and exhibition tournament that does not count toward tour rankings.

However, there is prize money involved and the players do take it seriously. In the weeks that lead up to the Australian Open there are no major tournaments on tour. Events like Brisbane and Auckland are often loaded with peripheral stars soAbu Dhabi is an important event for top players to get quality matches in against one another.

This year the event will be played from December 29th to December 31st. Besides Nadal, the other players that are expected to be at the event are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych, Andy Murray, Milos Raonic, and David Goffin.

The official Twitter account for the tournament offered the following posting on Monday.

Nadal still heading to London this week

Nadal may not be fit to play in the tour finals next week.

However, he should still be in London later this week for the ATP's Awards ceremony. The Spaniard, along with Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, and Andy Murray, was among the quartet of nominees for the year-end award, one that is named after Stefan Edberg. The award is one that is voted on by players while other awards are determined by the rankings, ones that Nadal cannot win.

However, besides the sportsmanship award, which he won in 2010, another awardthat he may be in the running for is called the Fans' Favourite award. That is one that is voted on by fans and Nadal is certainly one of the more endearing, athletic, and popular players on tour.
