The eighth edition of the #Melia Cuba Golf Cup drew 119 men and women players from six countries to the Caribbean island’s only 18-hole course – Varadero Golf Club -- for an event known to combine fun with friendly competition. The players were accompanied by 61 companions to bring the event’s total to 180 birdie and sun seekers. Fifty-one were from Canada, 43 flew in from Argentina, 17 came from Mexico, five arrived from the U.S., four teed it up from Spain and another foursome of players was from #Cuba. The categories the golfers were divided into were men with handicaps of 0 to 14 and 15 to 26 and women with handicaps of 0 to 14 and 15 to 36.

On the men's side it was a Canadian sweep

Champions in each category won a week’s free stay at an all-inclusive #Melia Hotels International property in Cuba. Runners-up were awarded with various golf equipment prizes. Winning the women’s 0 to 14 handicap net category was Kathleen Delisle of Canada while Mary Ann Langrall of the U.S. topped the leaderboard in the 15 to 36 net category. On the men’s side it was a Canadian sweep as Jason Craddock captured first in the 0 to 14 net category and Jeff Krause dominated the 15 to 26 net category.

Second place in the women’s 0 to 14 net category went to Marlin Price of Canada and runner-up in the 15 to 36 net category was taken by Susana Lilian Hornung of Argentina. Pierre Cote of Canada landed in second in the 0 to 14 net category and Argentina’s Hugo Blanco earned second place in the 15 to 26 net category. The best overall gross scores were posted by Elizabeth Granahan of the United States and Jim Beck of Canada. The majority of the players stayed at the all-inclusive Melia Las Americas Resort, which has attracted some of the biggest names in golf recently.

2017 tournament schedule already set

Nine-time PGA Tour major winner #Gary Player of South Africa and two-time PGA Tour major champion #Greg Norman of Australia both appeared at Melia Las Americas and the Varadero Golf Club in early October. The schedule is already set for tournaments in 2017. The fourth annual Melia Las Americas Golf Cup is slated for May 17-20 and the ninth annual Melia Cuba Golf Cup will be played from Oct. 18-21.
