The Jared Goff era is finally upon the NFL. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback, who was drafted with the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, has been named the starting quarterback of the team, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Goff has yet to play a single snap in his regular season career.

Case Keenum's poor play

The change at quarterback became necessary due to the increasingly poor play of Rams quarterback Case Keenum. On three separate occasions, the offense failed to score a touchdown under Keenum's leadership. Keenum, 28, ranks towards the bottom of all major quarterback statistics in the NFL this season, throwing for 2.169 yards with just nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions, plus five fumbles.

Keenum will back up Goff going forward, with Sean Mannion remaining as the third-string quarterback.

The time is right for Goff

As each week in the NFL season passed, questions surrounded coach Jeff Fisher as to why he refused to replace the ineffective Keenum with the hyped Goff. Some even believed Goff was ill-equipped for the NFL, and the Rams were mistaken to take him with the top overall pick. Now, the Rams will see if they started their Los Angeles journey with the right quarterback.

Goff lit up the scoreboard in college, setting school records for the California Golden Bears. He has to be encouraged by the performance he has seen around the NFL from other rookie signal-callers who were believed to be overmatched prior to the season.

Carson Wentz led the Philadelphia Eagles to an undefeated start before tapering off a bit, while Dak Prescott has led the Dallas Cowboys to the best record in the NFL, calling into question whether or not Tony Romo would get his job back when he returned from injury.

Despite the Rams defeating the New York Jets in an ugly 9-6 game in Week 10, this is the right time for Goff to be inserted into the lineup.

The Rams are 4-5 and have little playoff hope, so they should give their young players a chance. Additionally, Goff will get to play in front of a Los Angeles crowd this weekend instead of a hostile road environment. Jared Goff will make his NFL debut on Sunday afternoon against the Miami Dolphins.
