There are a couple of games every team in the NFL goes through in a season that can be looked back upon as the reason a team either did or did not make the playoffs. For the Kansas City Chiefs, the 20-17 victory against Carolina Panthers on Sunday was just that game. Trailing 17-3 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Chiefs scored 17 points in the final quarter to steal the victory from the Panthers. In nearly every facet of the game, Kansas City was outplayed for the majority of the game. However, all that matters is the final score, and now Kansas City is 7-2 and tied for first in the AFC West.

Eric Berry starts the Chiefs comeback with an interception return for a touchdown

Throughout the game, there was a feeling the Chiefs had to make a huge play on defense if they were going to get the win. Trailing 17-6, star safety Eric Berry made just that play. Quarterback Cam Newton, who Berry has played against since their high school days in Atlanta, tried to squeeze a pass into a tight window, and Berry read it all the way. After securing the interception, Berry showed off his playmaking abilities by taking the ball the other way for the 42-yard touchdown. The Chiefs had nothing going all day, but Berry got the team back on the right track with an incredible play.

Cairo Santos hits some huge field goals when the team couldn’t finish drives

It was not a pretty day for the offense, as the unit could not sustain any kind of momentum. However, Cairo Santos helped make up for the struggles by making all four of his field goal attempts. Fans get frustrated by kickers at times, but Santos was a huge reason why the team won.

Another AFC West team, the Denver Broncos, won on Sunday against New Orleans because of a blocked PAT they returned for a touchdown. Kickers may not be the most glorious position in football, but for the Chiefs, they were lucky Santos did his job on Sunday.

This win could continue what could be a dream season

Just like last season, the Chiefs are rolling on a long winning streak, as they have now won five consecutive games. What is scary for the rest of the NFL is this team is only going to get better. Justin Houston, one of the very best defensive players in the league is close to getting back, and Jeremy Maclin should be back soon to provide more help on the offensive side of the ball. This was not the prettiest game, but to be able to get the victory today shows what this team can be. Kansas City is not only in great shape to win the AFC West, but is also a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
