badminton is not a very popular sport in India, where the public thinks and dreams of cricket. But times are changing and stars from other sports are making headlines. The latest is PV Sindhu, a 21-year-old girl from Hyderabad. Sindhu is a south Indian Telugu speaking girl who has defied tradition in a country where generally women get fewer opportunities than boys and men. Sindhu had made waves earlier by winning the silver medal at the Rio Olympics

Hyderabad a cosmopolitan city has given India another world class badminton player Sania Nehwal who also won an Olympic medal in Badminton at the 2012 Olympics.

Both girls are the golden girls of Indian sports. PV Sindhu has now added another feather to her cap by winning all China open badminton championship. In the final, she beat the Chinese girl Sun Yu aged 22 in a thrilling match 21-11, 17-21, 21-17. The Chinese are among the best in Badminton and have produced players who have dominated the world. Sindhu's victory over the Chinese girl was almost like slaying the dragon.

Sindhu's coach Gopichand who is also the coach of Sania must take credit for this performance. The lanky 5ft 11-inch girl had earlier swept to the final with a string of victories. The China open is recognized as one of the super series in the world of badminton and winning the game and championship has done India proud.

Both in China and India the preference for boys has resulted in a low ratio of women to men but this win by Sindhu will give a fillip to the world of discrimination against girls.

Last word

Coming to the match it could have gone either way when Sindhu was down 17-20 in the second set, but she pulled herself up and even after losing the second set went on to win the last set 21-17.

Later she said " I think it's my self-confidence, I gave it100% and play at any point"

Sindhu is a bachelor girl from Hyderabad and the darling of the city. She has no boyfriends and perhaps that is a good thing as she can concentrate on her game. She has many years to go and one hopes she will win more laurels for the country.

With Sania injured the mantle has now fallen on Sindhu to carry the flag for girls in India.
