After winning the toss, Virat Kohli had no hesitations to bat first on a pitch where the ball directly comes on to the bat. But the hosts faced an early blow, as Lokesh Rahul got dismissed in a Stuart Broad delivery. Murali Vijay too failed to find the momentum, and he was dismissed at 20 when the team total was just 22.

But later, Pujara along with Virat Kohli steadied the Indian ship, and they put up a third wicket partnership of 226 runs. Post lunch, Pujara was dismissed in an Anderson delivery when his score was 119. Ajinkya Rahane came next but was soon dismissed.

For the English side, it was James Anderson who led the bowling attack from the front. The pace bowler took three wickets by conceding just 44 runs in his 16 over spell.

Alastair Cook will be depending on Adil Rashid a lot on the second day, as the surface in Visakhapatnam will favor spinners a lot.
