For the 2nd time in a row, Serena Williams decided not to play any WTA event during the indoor session. As she did in 2015, following the US Open she put Tennis on the sidelines. She has a lot to consider as this season was rather a droughty one compared to the previous years. Perhaps the most difficult moment was the moment when she lost the WTA crown to Angelique Kerber as a result of her defeat against Karolina Pliskova in US Open semis.

Though fans are eager to see her playing, it`s not likely to see Williams in an official WTA event until next year in January in Melbourne as she made a habit of not playing a warm-up event as an overture for the Australian Open.

Serena didn`t make a change in her style

Throughout the season of 2016, despite her apparently poor results, Serena Williams made it to 3 Grand Slam finals winning in Wimbledon and losing the first one in Melbourne and the second one at the French Open.

The former world no. 1 had her trademark style of playing but it was the opponent who raised the bar. At the Australian Open, Angelique Kerber stunned Williams at the end of a thrilling 3 sets match winning her maiden Major event.

On the French clay, it was Garbine Muguruza who turned the odds in her favor. In fact, the 22-years-old Spaniard reached her peak during the French Open. Overall, her season was not that great, but in the final against Serena, she did all by the book winning in straight sets.

Serena Williams` failure was a sum of factors, most of them being impossible to counteract. At the highest level, the age, lately results, the mindset, the surface of play, all counts. Even more, a final`s pressure is quite unique especially when people have such great expectations from a player like Williams.

Serena`s future is rather uncertain

Her newest problem seems to be a shoulder injury. In the past 2 seasons, as she fought for numerous WTA records, her body suffered a tremendous risk exposure.

Last year, she admitted the fact of playing with ongoing juries for most of the season. Although it was prolific in terms of achievements, it rather was a double-edged strategy which may have unintended consequences for the 35-year-old American tennis star.
