When Real Madriddecided that it was going to sack manager Rafa Benitez, one of the first people that the team contacted was former Barcelona player and manager, Pep Guardiola. Guardiola had already announced that he would be leaving Bayern Munich in the summer of 2016 and Madrid wanted to know his feelings on becoming manager for the 2016-17 season.

Real Madrid

Spanish journalist Marti Perarnau had his book "Pep Guardiola: La Metamorfosis" hit stores recently and he told Cadena Ser that between November and December of 2015, Real Madrid contacted Guardiola's agent to gauge his interest in joining his former team's biggest rivals.

Perarnau made sure to point out that Pep immediately shot down Real Madrid.

Guardiola said that he's an FC Barcelona "follower" and that he wasn't a "fit" to become Real Madrid's manager.

Manchester City

On February 1, it was announced that Guardiola would take over at Manchester City, which was only a few weeks removed from Madrid announcing that former French football star Zinedine Zidane would be promoted from Castilla to take over for Benitez.

Pep led City to an unbeaten record through its first six Premier League contests and first 11 matches in all competitions. Unfortunately, the team's great run immediately turned sour with a draw against Celtic on September 28 in the UEFA Champions League.

Since that match, Guardiola's club has gone winless in its last six contests in all competitions.

The main problem for Manchester City has been the inability to put the ball in the back of the net. Over the last five contests, Guardiola's team has only scored two goals as star striker Sergio Aguero has struggled along with winger Raheem Sterling.

The good news for City is that the team's hot start still has them sitting in first place in the Premier League table with 20 points. The club is tied with Arsenal and Liverpool, but has the edge with a plus-11 goal differential. If Guardiola can get his team back on track, Manchester City has a shot at winning a Premier League title in his first season on the sidelines.
