The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators on Monday night in a game that was played at Joe Louis Arena. The final score was 5-1 with Detroit taking command in the first period and never really allowing Ottawa to get back into the game. The result sees Detroit grab their first win of the season three games into their NHL schedule.

Mike Green had a hat trick

The game-high goal scorer was Mike Green who netted his first three goals of the season for Detroit. He had two in the first period and one in the final frame that effectively sealed the deal. The only other goal scorer for Detroit was Darren Helm, the forward scoring twice including the game-winner.

Veteran Thomas Vanek did not score any goals, but he had a multi-point night for the Red Wings just the same as he tallied three assists.

On the flip side of Detroit's offence Andrew Hammond, Ottawa's goalkeeper certainly had a night that he'd like to forget. Hammond was in netforall five goals and only stopped 20 of the 25 shots that he faced. The backuphad been making his first start of the season, and it's safe to say that he didn't make a great impression.

What's next for both teams?

Ottawa, following what was their first loss of the season, will return home for the balance of the week. The Senators face Arizona on Tuesday night in a game that starts at 7:30 pm ET. Then on Saturday the Senators will host the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 7 pm ET start.

Given how poor Hammond's stats were in the game on Monday, it would be surprising if the Senators did not go back to Craig Anderson on Tuesday to try and stay perfect at home.

The Red Wings, following what was their first win of the season, will head to New York to face the Rangers on Wednesday night (8 pm ET).

After that they have a pretty busy weekend at home as they host the Nashville Predators and the San Jose Sharks on Friday and Saturday night respectively (7:30 pm ET/7pm ET).

Other results on Wednesday included more blowout victories. For example, the New York Rangers beat the San Jose Sharks 7-4 while Boston defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-1.
