If someone ever thinks about making a motivational drama revolving around a Tennis player, Juan Martin del Potro must be on the shortlist. The 28-years-old Argentine just capped a tremendous season with his late success in Stockholm. Despite being a small ATP event ( ATP 250), Stockholm broughtdel Potro back in the top 50 ATP. As some people might know, last year, del Potro was considering retiring from professional tennis due to his ongoing health issues. Now, with his ranking being so much improved, he will have the opportunity to play more ATP events. Next season will be crucial in this way, a test for the former 2009 US Open champion.

Del Potro climbed 1000 spots in 2016

Due to his wrists issues, del Potro was not able to perform on the ATP Tour in the past years. In January, his ranking plunged dangerously reaching the low bottom in early February. Ranked as 1045 in the world, del Potro played couple events on the South American clay and jumped up hundredsof places. The real test came up at Wimbledon. By being granted a wild card from the organizers, del Potro popped up in the men`s singles draw. He made an impressive comeback and won against Stan Wawrinka after being a set behind. That was the spark he needed to crave for more. At the Olympics, he stunned Djokovic in the opening match and Nadal in the semis. Despite losing the final against Murray, he still won the silver medal proving himself that is not over yet in terms of great results.

With his wrist being in a better condition, he moved forward into US Open reaching the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, his ranking progress was substantial. Despite having little success during the Asian indoor session, he still got what he needs. The title in Stockholm is his first ATP triumph since Sydney back in early 2014.

In the final, he left to chance to Jack Sock by winning in straight sets 7-5 6-1. Moreover, he won the indoor event in Sweden by not dropping a set the whole tournament.

Del Potro is craving for more

The Argentine role model won`t call an end to the season. Tomorrow, he is scheduled to play in Basel ( ATP 500 ) in the first round against the Dutch Robin Haase (ATP 64).

Del Potro`s new ranking position (42 ATP) will guarantee him the presence in the main drawfor the major ATP events in the first half of 2017.

In 2016, he came up a long way to regain a well-deserved position on the ATP Tour. If his wrist won`t make any wrong steps, the next season will be a delightful one. The ATP circuit could use such a great player, in a moment when some sort of drought is hanging around having sidelined Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal on medical grounds.
