US GP’s recap

Sunday’s race will be the 46th edition of US GP, the fifth at Austin. The history of this GP is long as a lot American racetrack host it. Even before the Gran Prix era, F1 put the States in its schedule with the first appearance in 1908. In the 50’, F1 was also part of Indianapolis 500.

The first racetrack that held a US GP was at Sebring International Raceway (1959). The following year, F1 visited Riverside, before going for 20 years to the famous Walking Glen (it hosts also a NASCAR race). After that, it was the turn of Phoenix (1989 – 1991). The new century marked the return of US GP, this time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It hosted eight editions, including the one (2005) where the grid was composed of only 10 drivers, because the others were excluded for safety reasons.

Finally, in 2012 Austin succeed to bring back the US GP in F1 calendar with all new circuit, designed purposely for Formula 1 racing. The first edition was a huge success that receives good ratings from the public.

However, last year was marked by a very bad weather that created many problem and very few people attended the race.

The standings situation

Nico Rosberg is dominating the grid with 33 points gap from Lewis Hamilton. It is a must win situation for the English driver, if he wants to stay in the race for the title championship.

Not only because he could reduce the gap but also to show psychologically that he could still recover; otherwise, all is in the hands of his teammate.

Behind them, it is interesting the fight for fourth between Raikkonen, Verstappen and Vettel. There is 5 points gap between them. Moreover, it is necessary for Ferrari to get a good result in order to reduce the gap from Red Bull. The Italian team lost ground in the last races, both technically and mentally and Red Bull took advantage of that. They need to retake the second Constructors’ standings position to get the maximum resources for the next season, where the rules will change drastically.

The racetrack in quite challenging with high speed corners, technical sectors and many elevation changes.

Nico Rosberg is a very good fit but Hamilton had proved to be very fast in this circuit with two straight victories. Overall, Ferrari take the most wins on a US GP so all the ingredients for a good are present.
