The Arizona Coyotes had a pretty good preseason. They went 5-1-2, tallied 12 points in the standings, and finished first in the Pacific Division. They promise to be an interesting team to watch in the early goings of the upcoming season.

Betting lines on the Arizona Coyotes

When you look at the betting lines and betting odds on the Coyotes for the 2016/17season, it's very clear that they are not a team facing high expectations.

  • Arizona are 75/1 to win the Stanley Cup with 888Sport
  • Arizona are 25/1 to win the Pacific Division with Ladbrokes
  • Arizona are 5/7 to tally less than 79.5 points in the standings with bet365

Despite the odds implying a weak season for Arizona,it's important to keep in mind that there are surprises every season in the NHL.

Hockey fans need only to look back to last season to find a big one. After all, few would have picked the Florida Panthers to win their division last season, however that's exactly what they did.

Pacific Division -- out with the old?

The Arizona Coyotes, despite the fact that they still have 40-year-old Shane Doan, have a ton of youth on their side. Anthony DeAngelo, Anthony Duclair, and Maxi Domi are three players in the 21-and-under crowd.

In apreview of the Pacific Division, ESPN writer Matthew Coller describes a division with aging teams and emerging young ones:"The Pacific Division has two types of teams: Those on the rise, and those trying to hang on to one last run at the Stanley Cup" (October 11th, 2016).

As Coller sees it the Los AngelesKings, the Anaheim Ducks, and the San Jose Sharks could be teams on the decline. Meanwhile Edmonton, Calgary, and Arizona stand to gain what the other teams lose.

Of course the emerging young teams need their players to step up and win some games. A lot of players that have had that weight expectation in the past have failed.

Nail Yakupov for example, a former top pick, is a case in point as his opening years in Edmonton never amounted to realized potential.

Arizona's Max Domi is a player to watch with the Coyotes. Last season Domi played in 81 games, he scored 18 goals and tallied 34 assists, and he had a impressive points totals of 52.

Those are strong rookie numbers that may improve this season.

Anthony Duclair is another player that may post stronger numbers. Last season he had 44 points in 81 games, averaging just better than a half point per game.

Preseason can build confidence

With preseason games, the results certainly have to be taken with a grain of salt. Teams are testing things out, the best players often sit, and the motivation isn't entirely there yet. However 12 points out of a possible 16 in the regular season promises to be confidence building for this young Arizona team. I think they are likely to do better than 80 points in the standings and may challenge for one of the last playoff spots in the Pacific or in the western conference's wild card standings.

Arizona's regular season starts on Saturday. They will host the Philadelphia Flyersthat night in a game that starts at 6pm MT.
