Things looked bleak for the New York Yankees going into the ninth inning on Wednesday, but then a little bit of magic happened. The Boston Red Sox were just three outs away from eliminating the Yankees from any chance at postseason play, but then the Bronx Bombers rallied four five runs for a 5-3 win over their rivals and survived for at least one more day. The soon to be retired Mark Teixeira capped off the rally with a walk-off grand slam.

The situation

Many things will have to break the Yankees way the next four days for them to make the MLB playoffs, but at least there still is a small chance.

After play on Wednesday, the Yankees trailed the Baltimore Orioles by four games for the second wild-card spot in the American League. The Orioles rallied as well on Wednesday to beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2. Four other teams are trying to also lock down one of the two wild-card spots.

The good news

The Yankees will have the opportunity to square off against the Orioles in a three-game series this weekend. If the Orioles lose to the Blue Jays on Thursday and Yankees can finish the sweep of the A.L. East winning Red Sox then the Yankees will be playing meaningful baseball on Friday. The Yankees would need to sweep the Orioles as well.

The bad news

The other four teams in the running for the wild card spots present a huge problem. The Yankees can't catch the Blue Jays at the top so in theory there is only one spot open. The Detroit Tigers are three games ahead of the Yankees and they have one more game against the Cleveland Indians and then a three-game set on the road against the struggling Atlanta Braves. The Seattle Mariners sit two games ahead of New York and they start a four-game series against the last place Oakland A's on Thursday at Safeco Field.

Finally, the Houston Astros are just 1/2 game in front of the Yankees and they finish the season with three games with the Los Angeles Angels in California.

The outlook

In the end, a whole lot of things will need to break the Yankees way for them to make the playoffs, but stranger things have happened. It is always better to have a slight chance than no chance at all.
