As the conditions in the Indian sub-continent have always been troubling for New Zealand, the spin-wary Kiwis took some important tips from former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly during their practice session before the second Test match on September 30, 2016, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The game start time is 9.30 AM IST. India is now leading the series 1-0, as they won the first Test by 197 runs.

Day 1 summary:

India wins the toss, bat first.

239/7 in 86 overs - (C Pujara 87, Rahane 77).

For New Zealand - Henry 35/3, JS Patel66/2

Return of Gautam Gambhir:

K L Rahul's hamstring injury may have been destabilized the Indian batting lineup, but it has turned favorable for veteran batsman Gautam Gambhir who is making his return to the National side.

The 35-year-old batsman may face huge competition in finding his spot in the playing eleven, as skipper Virat Kohli is more interested in includingMurali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan in the opening spots.

The inclusion of Gambhir in the team has now fetched negative criticisms from cricketing experts, as they believe that he will be sitting on the bench throughout the series, as the team is filled with classic batsmen which include, Kohli,Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Murali Vijay.

Jayant Yadav, the young spinner, who bowled some spectacular spells in the recent domestic season has also made his way into the 15 member squad.

New Zealand is all prepared

New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan along with his teammates spent some hours with Saurav Ganguly in the Eden, and the left-hander gave some crucial tips to bat in the Indian conditions. The pitch in Eden may not be that favorable for spinners like the other Indian stadiums, as yesterday morning, the curator has further trimmed the grass from the surface.

Bermuda grass has been used in the pitch, and it is expected that the ball will move much faster. From day 3, the surface will surely act in favor of slow bowlers.

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand skipper, is quite confident in winning this game. The team has some noted talents including Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, and Ross Taylor.
