The Heisman Trophy is one of the most prestigious awards in all of sport. Through the first month of the season, it has become increasingly clear which college footballerdeserves it in 2016. "ESPN" expert polls have their prediction, and now here's a look at the top five "Basting News" contenders for the Heisman Trophy through the end of Week 4.

1. QB Lamar Jackson, Louisville Cardinals

Jackson has been the sensational story of the college Football season, emerging from practically nowhere to lead all players in touchdowns by a longshot with 25 (13 passing, 12 rushing). Against Marshall this week, he threw for 417 yards while tossing seven touchdowns and rushing for two more.

He has a major challenge this week at Clemson, who has another Heisman Trophy candidate.

2. QB J.T. Barrett, Ohio State Buckeyes

Barrett had off in Week 4. He has accounted for 13 touchdowns overall so far while only throwing one interception. His team hosts Rutgers on Saturday afternoon.

3. RB Christian McCaffrey, Stanford Cardinal

McCaffrey was expected to be a Heisman Trophy favorite entering the season. By some standards, he has underwhelmed - he only has three rushing touchdowns so far this season, including no scores against UCLA in Week 4. Stanford is breaking in a new quarterback, though, and McCaffrey's weaponized skillset allows his quarterback to develop without too much defensive pressure.

Stanford looks to stay undefeated in a major showdown in Washington on Friday night.

4. RB Donnel Pumphrey, San Diego State Aztecs

Pumphrey runs in relative obscurity at San Diego State, a team stuck in a Group of 5 conference, the Mountain West. Nevertheless, he leads the nation in rushing by a country mile and reminds some of another legendary San Diego State running back: Marshall Faulk.

He should dominate at South Alabama this week.

5. QB Deshaun Watson, Clemson Tigers

Watson was the heavy favorite for the Heisman Trophy entering the season but has struggled in the face of an uptick in defensive pressure. He would do a lot for his standing in the race with a victorious performance over Louisville on Saturday night.
