In spite of feeding on each other, the Southeastern Conference is still the strongest Football conference, according to both college football sports writers and football coaches. The conference still boasts six teams in the top 25, even though LSU fell out after an 18-13 loss at Auburn. Some say Les Miles' job is in danger. Both polls include 2-2 Mississippi.

Only the SEC can beat the SEC

The road was not good to SEC football teams Sept. 24. That comes in the same week eight of the teams were ranked in the top 25 polls. The biggest surprise was probably the 45-14 whipping then-No. 23 Mississippi put on 12th-ranked Georgia.

Some in the Peach State are said to have called animal control in Mississippi to complain about the abuse their Dawgs were under. AP dropped Georgia to No. 25. The Volunteers ended 11-straight losses to Florida with a big second half. Tennesseerallied for 38 second half points to win 38-28. Florida is 21 in the coach’s poll with the loss.Mississippi State topped UMass and Vanderbilt beat Western Kentucky 31-30 in overtime for their first wins.

Does second try harder?

There were fewer surprises in the Big 10. The only upset Saturday was 11th ranked Wisconsin coming into East Lansing and scoring 17 unanswered points for a 30-6 rout of then 8th ranked Michigan State. The Badgers held MSU to just 75 yards rushing.

The conference still features five programs in the top 25. In another game of note, Iowa, which fell out of the polls last week after getting upset by North Dakota State, only topped perennial cellar-dweller Rutgers 14-7 in New Jersey.

ACC turns offensive

While there were no upsets in the Atlantic Coast Conference, it has the third most teams in the top 25 this weekend.

The game the conference will hang its hat on for the weekend is Duke’s 38-35 win at Notre Dame. It is of note that nine ACC schools scored more than 35 points this weekend. All but one (Pitt) lost at North Carolina, 37-36 on a last second touchdown.Virginia needed three touchdowns in the final 10 minutes to edge Central Michigan 49-35 for the Cavs first win of the season.

Syracuse beat Connecticut 31-24 for the Orangemen’s first victory.
