There might not be another Tennis era as exciting as the current one. Both male and women professional circuit have been dominated by a single player lately. If the men`s circuit has been under Novak Djokovic's reign, when it comes to women`s singles it was Serena Williamswho seized power. It is rather a unique development as both athletes made their crushing runs almost simultaneously. Starting late in 2013, their dominance has been unprecedented.

If Djokovic still has alot of work to do in order to level Federer or Nadal, for Serena Williams most of the work has already been done as she earlier this summer tied up Steffi Graf`s record of 22 Grand Slam titles in women`s singles. With the upcoming US Open on her way, Serena Williams has the chance to surpass the 22 Slams` milestone.

Last US Open was a painful one as it triggered a decline

Last year, Serena Williams suffered a huge upset in the US Open semis against Roberta Vinci.

That match was labeled as `one of the biggest upsets in tennis history," simply because no one saw that coming. Serena had an extraordinary season in 2015. She won the first 3 Grand Slams of the season and a success at the US Open was nothing more than a smooth follow up. After that loss, Serena chose not to compete for the rest of the season due to lack of motivation and some injuries she had to deal with.

In 2016, she played the first 2 Grand Slam finals but she lost them. At 2016 Wimbledon, she finally won the 22 Grand Slam, but the was unable to maintain the pace and further she crashed in the opening stages at the Olympics in Rio.

For Serena, 2016 US Open starts with a big match

Yesterday, when the draw came out it was crystal clear that Serena Williams must produce her best tennis if she wants the ultimate glory on her side.

In the opening match, she will have to deal with Ekaterina Makarova, a former top 10 player, and 2014 US Open semifinalist. The 28-year-old Russian has been struggling with form lately but she remains a dangerous player able to produce some high-quality tennis.

Serena Williams is the leading name in the upper half of the draw. In her quarter, a dangerous name awaits - Simona Halep, 5 WTA, might bump into Serena`s course in the quarterfinals.

Halep has been in great shape lately with a title in Montreal and a semifinal in Cincinnati. For Serena, it`ll be an extra pressure to deal with as she needs to defend last yea's result. Angelique Kerber has little to defend and she might be the new WTA leader when this US Open will come to an end.
