There is no doubt that this Olympic edition broughtin some unexpected outcomes. Both the women and male contests produced shocking results with most of the top-seeded athletes being outshone by their opponents. In women`s singles, yesterday`s developments followed the same line with Garbine Muguruza - 2016 French Open champion and Serena Williams- 2016 Wimbledon winner being reduced to silence by Monica Puig and Elina Svitolina respectively. If Muguruza is not in the best shape, Serena came to Rio with a morale burst due to her latest success in Wimbledon. Some cracks in Serena`s game were obvious in the first matches but she seemed to be still in charge.

Serena lost control of the match

In the 3rd round match against Elina Svitolina, Serena Williams put in little in order to block the opposite offensive. The 21-year-old Ukrainian got control of the opening set by breaking on Serena`s service. Serena kept the gapsmall with a re-break, but it was not enough. Svitolina,20 WTA, broke once again and eventually won the set by 6-4. The second set followed the same surreal path with the young Ukrainian pulling the strings. Despite a revival in the middle of the second act, Serena collapsed and lost the set by 6-3. It is a huge victory for Svitolinaand a massive upset for Serena who sees her Olympic ambitions being reduced to nothing. Williams also lost the doubles match a few days ago and she did not sign up for mixed doubles.

Multiple Olympic champion, Serena will leave Rio with an empty hand.

Serena will return to the US hardcourt series

As the damage has already been done, Serena`s next moves are focused on the US hardcourt season. Ahead are two events on which she is likely to attend, namely the Premier 5 event in Cincinnati and the US Open.

Serena will have to overcome the disappointment caused by the Olympics and to think about the near future. She has to defend the title in Cincinnati (900 ranking points) and a semifinal at the US Open (780). That means 1680 points to take care off in the next month. Is she fails to do so, Angelique Kerber is likely to become the new WTA leader simply because the German has a poor harvest to defend.
