Organizers of the 2016 Olympics had a rough start at the Football event which commenced yesterday. The host nation had played a 0-0 draw with South Africa, and the attention was turned to Manaus where the dream team VI were going to have a date with their Japanese opponents.

Earlier, it had taken a last minute effort of Delta Airlines to get the Nigerian team to Brazil as they had been stranded in Atlanta.

The shocking moment

They were definitely going to have more shocking moments as the commentator announced that it was time for the National Anthem of Nigeria. Surely the players were expecting to hear the rising tune of “Arise O compatriots….” However, the line of music was not the ones they were familiar with.

The look on the faces of the players speaks volume as they reacted with an unholy calm.

They were initially going to put their hands on their chest as a symbol of respect for their country, but hands started dropping and they kept mute. It was an embarrassing situation. Many Nigerians who woke up in the middle of the night (2 a.m. Precisely) to cheer their team were also shocked when they heard the Anthem.

The entertaining encounter overshadowed initial mix up

Despite the late arrival to Brazil, the Nigerian team managed to beat Japan 5 goals to 4. It was a thriller which saw Oghenekaro Etebo netting 4 goals out of the five scored by the Dream team.

The win has seen the Nigerian team move top of group B with 3 points and superior goal difference.

Coach Samson Siasia and his team could relish on the win and ignore the initial mix up. Team captain and Chelsea football club of England midfielder did not comment about the incident.

Call for early preparations and proper organizations

Shabby preparations had accustomed the country’s Olympic team, and some of the Athletes had sourced for funds from individuals and private companies.

The misplaced identity was a new low in the country’s quest to win honors at the tournament.

From Nigeria to Venezuela, we are not sure if similar mistakes will occur again. Officials and organizers must be proactive in order to prevent future embarrassment. Meanwhile, the moment will remain an unforgettable moment in the minds of many Nigerians and especially the Footballers.
