Swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympics kicks off Aug. 6, and by day's end, four event finals will have been decided. So which incredible athletes are favored to win gold medals for their respective nations? Day one Olympic betting odds posted to Bovada Sportsbook on Aug. 5 predicted which swimmers will score podium placements.

Olympic swimming odds: Men's 400m IM

In the men's 400m individual medley (IM) --the event won by American Ryan Lochte at the 2012 Olympic Games in London-- a pair of Japanese swimmers are favored to place one-two, with Kosuke Hagino (-250) taking top billing over teammate Daiya Seto (+225).

The best chance for an American to medal belongs to Chase Kalisz, who is the third-ranked competitor with +700 odds of winning Olympic gold.

Other top-ranked swimmers include:

  • David Verraszto, Hungary, +950
  • Jay Litherland, USA, +1600
  • Thomas Fraser Holmes, Australia, +2500
  • Shun Wang, China, +4000

Men's 400m freestyle

With -120 odds, China's Sun Yang is favored to win the gold in the 400m freestyle event. Ranked second behind Yang is Mack Horton of Australia (+165). Others expected to contend for podium finishes include:

  • James Guy, Great Britain, +700
  • Connor Jaeger, USA, +1600
  • Gabriele Detti, Italy, +1600
  • Park Tae-hwan, South Korea, +2000
  • Ryan Cochrane, Canada, +2000

The women's first Rio event: 400m IM

After the first two men's races are decided, the women will hit the pool to contest their very first final at Rio 2016: the 400m IM.

Expected to win the race is Hungary's Katinka Hosszu (-750), who finished fourth in the event at the London Games. American Maya DiRado is second-most likely to score the victory with +700 odds. Other predicted top contenders include:

  • Hannah Miley, Great Britain, +1400
  • Emily Overholt, Canada, +1400
  • Mireia Belmonte, Spain, +1600
  • Elizabeth Beisel, USA, +2200

Beisel is the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the event.

The first Rio 2016 relay

The final swimming event contested on day one at the Rio Olympics will bethe women's 4x100m relay. With -1000 odds, Team Australia is expected to win gold, with Team USA ranked second (+600) and the Netherlands ranked third (+700). The US squad comprised of Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer, and Allison Schmitt won the gold in world record time at the 2012 Olympics.
