For the Bejing 2008 Olympics, Phelpsgold medal diet was tons of junk food (burgers, pizza, hot dogs) and loads of carbohydrates.

For Rio 2016, Phelps eats less junk food and fewer calories (he says the 12,000 calorie estimate might have been exaggerated). He still eats high carbs, but has added more whole grains, vegetables, and lean protein. That could have something to do with age --Phelps is 31 now and might not be able to eat as much as he did when he was younger. Many once-thin people get overweight and obese in later adulthood. They think because they never had a weight problem they can eat whatever they want and not get fat.

But they forget to factor in slowing metabolism. Michael Phelps' metabolism surely hasn't slowed down. He maintains a trim 198-lb, 6'4' frame. But he might be eating healthier out of common sense.

High carb swimmers' diet

You might be surprised to learn that athletes and particularly swimmers not only can eat, but have to eat a mind-blowing amount of carbs in training. Swimming is the most intensive event to train for as it involves the entire body all the time. Have you ever noticed how hungry you are after swimming?

That's because swimmers burn a huge amount of calories in the water. Before a meet, swimmers eat energy-producing carbs -- bagels, chocolate milk, pasta, vegetables, pizza, bread, and sandwiches. These are good complex carbs, not just sugar and simple carbs. People who are working at weight loss cut carbs, typically, because carbs pack pounds unless you burn them off. That's why competitive swimmers put on weight if they keep eating the way they did during the season. High carb diets can lose weight if coupled with lots of exercise.
