Yesterday, the last Grand Slam of the year had its start in New York. Except for Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych, all the ATP high-ranked player had their spots in the main draw. Lately, it`s been quite a storm of stats, predictions, analysis revolving around who`s going to win this particular US Open. There was only one match with a stunning outcome as Richard Gasquet (15 ATP) was stunned by the young British hope Kyle Edmund (84 ATP).

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic held the headlines of the first day with their opening matches. And, as expected, no unexpected outcomes came out of their encounters. Both players secured themselves a spot in the next stages.

Rafael Nadal put in a perfect display of power

The Spaniard, 30, is getting some momentum as he earlier this month returnedon the tennis court following his arm wrist injury. US Open seems as a great opportunity to regain his confidence. In the first round, Nadal left nothing on the table for his opponent Denis Istomin (107 ATP). In terms of strategy, it was a game totally under Nadal`s will. Eventually, Istomin surrendered at the end of a 3 setsexecution6-1 6-4 6-2.

In the 2nd round, Nadal will face Andreas Seppi (87 ATP). Despite his low ranking stats, the Italian tennis player might be a challenging partner as he has been around ATP top 50 for years.

Novak Djokovic made some last adjustments

The Serb, 29, made his debut at the US Open against the Polish player Jerzy Janowicz (247 ATP). Janowicz who was no. 14 ATP and also played a Wimbledon semifinal back 2013 took Djokovic to a 4 sets thriller.

Despite the opposition, the defending champion at the US Open found out the proper way to deal with the current situation and clinched the victory 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1. In the 2nd match, the Serb champion will face Jiri Vesely (49 ATP).

Djokovic needs to make an extraordinary run in New York if he wants to shut all those critical voices around his recent inconsistency. As the draw stands, Djokovic and Nadal may play against each other in the semifinal.

They are in the upper half of the draw along with other big names such as Milos Raonic, Marin Cilic or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
