The Buffalo Bills have been hit very hard by countless injuries throughout the offseason. First round pick Shaq Lawson needed surgery when it was initially reported that he would not. Second round pick Reggie Ragland suffered a partially torn ACL that will keep him out for the entire year. And IK Enemkpali suffered a season ending injury in his first preseason game against the Colts. The Bills have attempted to address most of these injuries with replacements, but have not yet filled all the holes.

Kroy Biermann

According to Adam Schefter, the Bills have signed free agent defensive end Kroy Biermann to help replace IK Enemkpali.

The defensive end was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He spent his entire eight year career with the Falcons before being signed by the Bills this year. In his time with the Atlanta Falcons, Biermann accumulated 22 sacks, recorded 2 interceptions, and forced three fumbles. Last season, Biermann had 55 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble playing for the Falcons. The veteran should prove to be a stabilizing force for a young Bills defense that has been decimated by injuriesprior to the start of the regular season.

Other replacement players

Kroy Biermann can be added to the long list of players the Bills have already signed to address all the injuries they have suffered on the defensive side of the ball. Fan favorite Brandon Spikes signed a deal with the team to add further depth at the linebacker position. The Bills also chose to sign veteran linebacker David Hawthorne, who will also provide support to the linebacker corps.

At some point, the Bills are going to run out of replacement defensive veterans. For now, the team will continue to plug new holes with free agents like Kroy Biermann.

Can the defense withstand injuries?

The Bills starting defense looked excellent in their first preseason game against the Colts, despite the massive number of injuries.

The defense is still highly talented, with star players likeStephon Gilmore, Ronald Darby, Marcell Dareus, Jerry Hughes, and Corey Graham. The Bills defense still has the capability to be one of the best in the league as long as it suffers no more critical injuries to star players.
