One day before theWWE Draft, it was announced onMonday Night Raw thatRandy Orton would make his long-awaited return to WWE atWWE Battleground 2016 as a guest on Chris Jericho'sHighlight Reel. As the competition between the Raw and SmackDown brands heats up this summer, Orton will be representing the blue brand against Brock Lesnar, a representative of the red brand. Undoubtedly, Jericho will have questions for Orton about this marquee match-up atSummerSlam next month.

This will mark Orton's fourth appearance atWWE Battleground, although it's the first year he's attending without a match. That makes him as experienced as any other individualWWE Superstar, and his comeback won't happen without some noise.

Battleground hasn't been especially great for Randy Orton in the past, but it hasn't been especially bad either.

What follows is one part ina series of WWE Battlegroundhistory articles, in which we take a look at a WWE Superstar's historyat Battleground (such as The Shieldand John Cena),and what their past experiences might tell us about that competitor atWWE Battleground2016 on July 24.

Win-loss record atWWE Battleground

Randy Orton is batting .500 atBattleground, with a record of 1-1-1. His only win came in the only match that wasn't headliningBattleground and in which no WWE titles were on the line.

The win came at last year's event in a singles match againstSheamus, part of a feud to keep Orton busy while Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins competed for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

WWE Battleground title matches

Unfortunately for The Viper, he failed at both opportunities to take home theWWE Championship from WWE Battleground.

In 2013, he competed againstDaniel Bryanfor the vacated title. The Big Show interfered and caused a No Contest finish, leaving the title unclaimed. The next year, after the introduction of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he competed in a Fatal 4-Way for Cena's title, losing along with Kane and Roman Reigns.

Worthy competition atBattleground

When Sheamus is the least impressive opponent you've faced in three appearances, you know that you haven't had an easy set ofBattleground matches. Along with the Celtic Warrior, Randy Orton'sBattlegroundopponent list includesJohn Cena, Daniel Bryan, Kane andRoman Reigns. While it's not an official match, his interview with future WWE Hall of Fame inductee Chris Jericho at 2016's event is likely to get physical before it ends.

Predictions forBattleground2016

While Randy Orton doesn't have a match atWWE Battleground 2016, he'll certainly make a statement during his appearance onThe Highlight Reel with Chris Jericho. With the latest news onBrock Lesnar being that he was using anti-estrogen (as opposed to doping, as the scandal initially suggested), it will be interesting to hear what The Viper has to say about the other half of the Brock Lesnar vs.

Randy Orton match atSummerSlam. While he may not be able to pick up a victory, there's a good chance that Y2J will be on the receiving end of aRKO Outta Nowhere before the interview ends.

WWE Battleground2016airs live, exclusively on the WWE Network on July 24.Battleground will be available to stream on-demand immediately via the WWE Network. TheBattleground Kick-Off Show begins at 7/6c.
