One day before the WWE Draft, it was announced on Monday Night Raw that Randy Orton would make his long-awaited return to WWE at WWE Battleground 2016 as a guest on Chris Jericho's Highlight Reel. As the competition between the Raw and SmackDown brands heats up this summer, Orton will be representing the blue brand against Brock Lesnar, a representative of the red brand. Undoubtedly, Jericho will have questions for Orton about this marquee match-up at SummerSlam next month.

This will mark Orton's fourth appearance at WWE Battleground, although it's the first year he's attending without a match. That makes him as experienced as any other individual WWE Superstar, and his comeback won't happen without some noise. Battleground hasn't been especially great for Randy Orton in the past, but it hasn't been especially bad either.

What follows is one part in a series of WWE Battleground history articles, in which we take a look at a WWE Superstar's history at Battleground (such as The Shield and John Cena), and what their past experiences might tell us about that competitor at WWE Battleground 2016 on July 24.

Win-loss record at WWE Battleground

Randy Orton is batting .500 at Battleground, with a record of 1-1-1. His only win came in the only match that wasn't headlining Battleground and in which no WWE titles were on the line. The win came at last year's event in a singles match against Sheamus, part of a feud to keep Orton busy while Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins competed for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

WWE Battleground title matches

Unfortunately for The Viper, he failed at both opportunities to take home the WWE Championship from WWE Battleground. In 2013, he competed against Daniel Bryan for the vacated title. The Big Show interfered and caused a No Contest finish, leaving the title unclaimed. The next year, after the introduction of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he competed in a Fatal 4-Way for Cena's title, losing along with Kane and Roman Reigns.

Worthy competition at Battleground

When Sheamus is the least impressive opponent you've faced in three appearances, you know that you haven't had an easy set of Battleground matches. Along with the Celtic Warrior, Randy Orton's Battleground opponent list includes John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Kane and Roman Reigns. While it's not an official match, his interview with future WWE Hall of Fame inductee Chris Jericho at 2016's event is likely to get physical before it ends.

Predictions for Battleground 2016

While Randy Orton doesn't have a match at WWE Battleground 2016, he'll certainly make a statement during his appearance on The Highlight Reel with Chris Jericho. With the latest news on Brock Lesnar being that he was using anti-estrogen (as opposed to doping, as the scandal initially suggested), it will be interesting to hear what The Viper has to say about the other half of the Brock Lesnar vs.

Randy Orton match at SummerSlam. While he may not be able to pick up a victory, there's a good chance that Y2J will be on the receiving end of a RKO Outta Nowhere before the interview ends.

WWE Battleground 2016 airs live, exclusively on the WWE Network on July 24. Battleground will be available to stream on-demand immediately via the WWE Network. The Battleground Kick-Off Show begins at 7/6c.
