The 2016 Olympics will begin on August 5 and ends on August 21, 2016, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But this year’s event may be witnessing a low turnout due to the outbreak of Zika virus which has led to many athletes pulling out of the competition.

An Endemic Disease.

Zika virus is an infection of the Aedes mosquito species. These mosquitoes usually don't bite during the daytime and only bite at night. The virus can be transmitted from a pregnant mother to her fetus. The infection can lead to various degrees of birth defects. Scientists have not yet found medications for Zika treatment.

Symptoms of Zika virus include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache. These Symptoms are mild in the initial stage and then later become severe within two to seven days.

Virus originally from Uganda.

The virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys which were the first known carriers. In 1952, the Zika was found in humans in Uganda and Tanzania. The massive outbreak of the diseases was first recorded in the Yap Island which is now known as the Federated States of Micronesia. A relationship between Zika virus and Guillain-Barré syndrome was first noticed in Brazil in July 2015 while in October of the same year an association between Zika and microcephaly was also reported in Brazil.

South America hardest hit.

Brazil and many other South American Countries are the hardest hit by the Zika various outbreak. The World Health Organization has recommended prevention measures to curtail the spread of the virus which includes protection against mosquito bites such as wearing clothes that cover most of the body parts and sleeping under mosquito nets among others but the number of Athletes withdrawing from the Rio Olympics billed for this summer is increasing on a daily basis.

Fear of Contraction.

About 20 Golfers have withdrawn from the Rio Olympics Golf tournament over Zika virus concerns. Canada’s Milos Raonic and Romania’s Simona Halep were among the latest Golfers to pull out of the competition.
