The conviction of Barcelona’s striker Lionel Messi is a big blow to his credit and his team. Messi was handed a 21-month jail term for tax fraud but he has opted to appeal against the judgment at the Spanish Supreme court.

Lionel’s father Jorge Messi was also handed a suspended conviction as he and his son were found guilty of defrauding Spain.

Jorge was said to have evaded tax amounting to $4.5m between 2007 and 2009. Messi had played for many clubs before moving to Spain.

Following his failure to secure the trophy for his country in the just concluded Copa America, Messi has said he would be leaving his national team.

Tax Evasion

Lionel Messi is a great player that has broken records in Soccer both for his country and clubs. Spain had accused Messi and his father of tax fraud.

They have both been found guilty of defrauding the Spanish government over $5m in taxes. They claimed that both Messi and his father hid the money in offshore companies in Belize and Uruguay from 2007 to 2009.

Though Messi’ s lawyers had argued that Lionel was only interested about soccer and did not know of what was happening to his money but the court ignored their argument and handed him the sentence.

Barcelona is with him

Not left behind in his travail. Barcelona has asked their supporters all over the world to show their support and rally around theArgentine star who was convicted for tax fraud.

Both the father and son may not actually serve any jail term since Spanish law allows for the suspension for first offenses which jail term is less than two years.

Though Messi is to appeal against the conviction but Spanish law are strict on tax evasion.
