June was good to the Orioles

What a month June was for the Baltimore Orioles. Hyun Soo Kim’s solo home run in the seventh inning wasn’t enough to win the game on June 30th. It was Baltimore’s first run of the game, a 5-3 loss in Seattle, but the Oriole’s 56th of the month. By the way, the record for most dingers a month is 59 shared by the 1987 Birds and 1999 Mariners.

Baltimore had much more than the power ball going for them in their 19-9 month. The club hit an incredible .300 with a .888 OPS. Those numbers are freakish.Manny Machado led the way hitting .370. Jonathon Schoop hit .355 and received nine free passes.

Kim burst into the starting lineup and hit .333. Adam Jones came out of a season-long funk hitting .314. Jones added 11 long balls last month. Chris Davis had nine and Mark Trumbo hit eight homers. Pedro Alvarez added six dingers, Machado and Schoop each hit five.

Baltimore finds itself in the bird’s seat with the season more than half over. That is with a starting rotation that has only produced 32 quality starts in 79 opportunities. How is a club with such poor pitching 47-32? Closer Zach Britton and set up man Brad Brach are excellent. More importantly, the Orioles are getting on base more than in past years. While the long ball is nothing new in Baltimore, the runs are.

Everyone in major league baseball knows the Orioles need starting pitching.

They also know Baltimore also has one of the weakest minor league systems in MLB. While the Birds have a couple of everyday players they could open trade talks about, why fix what ain’t broke? The Orioles are expected to stay as they are for now.

It's ironic that an organization that was built on the arms of Jim Palmer, Mike Mussina, andMike Cuellarwould find itself in a situation not where the Orioles are in first place in the American League East, but with the team ERA down to 4.26.

Where are the Pat Dobsons, Stu Millers, Scot McGregors, Milt Pappas', and Tippy Martinez' of today? Like the Beatles sang: Yesterday seems so far away.
