Mackey Award

The Mackey award is given out every year to the best tight end in the country. This year, there are a lot of great names from big schools. Last year's winner was Hunter Henry, a great tight end out of Arkansas. In many offenses in college Football today, the tight end is not used as much as it should be. In order to win this award, you need to be able to put up great production in your offense. This is why teams like Arkansas continue to get some of the best tight ends in the country.

Who will win the Mackey?

There are some early favorites on who will win the Mackey this year. Jake Butt is a great player out of Michigan.

Not only does he excel off the field, but he is a great blocker on the field as well. He is the type of player that coaches want representing their program. Over the past couple of years, the tight end has become much more important in college football overall. There are a lot of people who are starting to wonder whether this trend will continue. Tight ends are vital for several reasons.

  • Run Blocking
  • Pass Catching
  • Versatility
  • Adding Offensive Wrinkles

Hunter Henry won the award last year, but there are plenty of other great options. One dark horse candidate may be Ethan Wolf out of Tennessee. Tennessee has a great chance to make a run at the national title this year, and this will only benefit Wolf in these rankings.

It will be interesting to see how the season plays out for each of these respective players.

The Importance of the Tight End.

In college football today, having a great tight end is a matchup problem going in against a defense. A player that can block and catch is hard to defend. Many offenses are starting to move away from the spread that was so popular for many years.

In doing this, the importance of the tight end is higher than ever before. Quality tight ends have several qualities that benefit their teams. Not only are they versatile, but they can also help to add in wrinkles to the offense overall. As it stands right now, this is a very deep group of Mackey watch list players.

In 2016, watch for offenses to make tight ends a bigger overall part of their offensive strategy.
