This year theWimbledon Championship is going to be quite an interesting one. In the women`s singles contest, some sort of frenzy is quite likely. All the top players are in the main draw with one exception worth mentioning. Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament due to a knee medical issue. It`s such a shame, judging by the huge results she had during the spring hardcourt season. In the past month, the WTA circuit had been a witness to some ranking related movements - young players are starting to be bolder thus the ranking dynamic is constantly changing. Moreover, Serena Williams` domination is seriously put to the test and Wimbledon makes no exception.

Somehow, the draw worked against her interests. Her part of the draw catches the eye at the very first glance.

The toughest opponents.

Serena went through a drought restrained season so far. In 2016 she pocketed only one title, the Premier 5 event in Rome. She was not able to win a Grand Slam despite playing both the Australian Open and Roland Garros finals. On each occasion, she succumbed to younger players like Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza. Wimbledon is likely to be a cornerstone for this current season. If she fails to defend her title, Serena might lose the WTA leadership. Until the tournament`s last match there are still plenty of tests ahead. Serena`s quarter is full with strong opponents.

There is a short list of some potential foes: Belinda Bencic 8 WTA, Agnieszka Radwanska 3 WTA, Petra Kvitova 11 WTA, Timea Bacsinzksy 12 WTA. The upper half of the draw is going to offer some serious Tennis, there is no doubt.

Stronger opponents requires an upper pace.

There is another facet regarding Serena`s run throughout Wimbledon that`s worth discussing.

If she bumps into some tougher opponents in the first rounds, then her pace and focus are going to get some extra practice in the perspective of those crucial, decisive matches. That`s the bright side of the problem. On the other side, her physical capabilities might suffer from exhaustion. Well, like in any sports, there are no perfect strategies involved in a competition and it might just require perfect timing.

Williams is running for the 22nd GrandSlam of her career, and she is one of the main favorites. She has the full bag - skills, strength, morale, and motivation. Still, she has not played an event on grass in 2016. This might be an issue, especially in the opening match, when she`ll need to make some late adjustments. Overall, it`ll be interesting to follow how her game will unfold on grass, and more important if she`ll get that 22nd elusive Grand Slam.
