In the first inning, Zobrist hit his tenth home run to left field. Giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Then Lester singled on a ground ball to center allow Szcur to score. Then the Cubs did not break the tie until the fifteenth inning with Bryant singled on a ground ball to left field allowing Zobrist to score. This gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead. The Reds did not score until the eighth inning with Hamilton hitting his third homer. Cincinnati Reds trailed 1-2 after eight. In the ninth inning, Suarez singled on a grounded ball to left field. Phillips scored Bruce to second. Cincinnati tied the game 2-2 after nine innings.

Joe Maddon was very resourceful by putting three relievers into left field. Maddon put in Travis Wood, Spencer Patton, and Pedro Strop.
