Copa America celebrated a century of its existence this year. For the vast majority, it was an additionalreason to enjoy the show of the tournament. But. in the final, there was more than a bit of drama involved. Chile played against Argentina once again. The previous final of Copa America (2012) was also a clash between the same two teams with the Chile national team also claiming the trophy. When it comes to finals, Argentina with Lionel Messi as its main core, has a tremendous mental jam. With Messi on the pitch Argentina lost all of the last four finals in which it was involved- Copa America (2008, 2012, 2016) and also the World Cup final in 2014.

Messi and Argentina fail again.

This year, Copa America was held in the United States. From a financial point of view, it was a success. The stadiums where the events were played were jam-packed. The figures showthat this event exceeded EURO 2016 regarding TV audiences. For Lionel Messi though, it was more like a disaster. Chile stood as a stone blocking any attempt. In the end, following120 minutes of playing ( including 30 minutes of extra-time) the scoreboard remained untouched. And the heat became unbearable as the clash was heading to a decisive penalties shootout. Chile had the stronger nerves and eventually clinched the 2016 Copa America.

No one knows what happened.

Argentina was set to kick the first penalty.

Lionel Messi headed to the ball but unfortunatelyhe sent the ball over the post. His further reaction gave a taste of his bitterness; he almost tore apart his jersey. Chile managed to hold the momentum and won the title. After the match, Messi stated that his international career is over. He further stated that he tried his best, but sometimes this is not enough to succeed.

And this trend started by Messi seems to grow inside the Argentine locker room. According to ESPN, there are other players who are considering their retirement from the national team. Among them are well-known Soccer stars like Kun Aguero ( Diego Armando Maradona` son-in-law), Angel di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Gonzalo Higuain.

All these players are currently playing for top teams in Europe.
