Making of History

Iceland’s victory over England achieved one of the biggest upsets in European Cup history. Their victory at Stade de Nice stunned each and every football fan in the world. England's manager, Roy Hodgson stepped down soon after the exit of his team from the Euro Cup 2016. This humiliating defeat will be ranked among the most shocking results in the history of English football. Since 2006, the English haven't won any matches in the knockout stages of any major tournaments.

Start of the Game.

Hodgson’s men started the game in 4-3-3 formation, keeping Sturridge, Kane and Sterling in front. It was a much-awaited match as the English got a comparatively easier opponent in the round-of-16. Raheem Sterling won the penalty for the English in the 4th minute of the match and Wayne Rooney did not miss the chance to give his team the lead. The lead lasted only for 2 minutes as Iceland's center back Ragnar Sigurdsson scored the equalizer from one of Aron Gunnarsson’s long throw down the right flank.

3 goals in 20 minutes.

Defense lapse and Joe Hart's mistake caused England much stress as Iceland found the back of the net through Kolbeinn Sigthorsson in the 18th minutes of the match. This goal sealed the victory for the Icelanders. All three goals were scored within first 20 minutes of the match. Iceland goalkeeper, Halldorsson was forced to save a volley from English striker Harry Kane before half time.

Iceland played tactically.

Hodgson introduced some fresh legs replacing Rooney, Dier and Sterling but could not change the result of the match. The men in blue did not sit back with a defensive mindset as they played in a well-planned way with a combination of defending and counter-attacking. Meanwhile, England created a lot of chances but could not break the deadlock of the Icelandic defense. Iceland played tactically and that helped them to keep their lead protected. It was a fast pace game altogether.

Soccer isa Team Game

This small nation does not have players like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. They totally focused on their team game and good understanding between the players brought Iceland this historic win. Iceland, the smallest nation ever to appear in Euro Cup will now play France, the host nation in the Quarter Final at Stade de France on Sunday.
